E.P. Sanders (Ed Parish Sanders) was an American New Testament scholar and theologian, born on April 18, 1937, and passed away on September 21, 2020. He gained his education in philosophy of religion, comparative religion, and biblical studies at Texas Christian University and Union Theological Seminary in New York City. E.P. Sanders is best known for his scholarship on Jesus, Paul, and Judaism during the Second Temple period. He was a prolific author, and his works include Jesus and Judaism, Paul, the Law, and the Jewish People, and Judaism: Practice and Belief 63 BCE-66 CE. E.P. Sanders was awarded the Burkitt Medal in Biblical Studies in 2004 and the prestigious Grawemeyer Award in 1993, among other honors. He once served as the Dean Ireland Professor of Exegesis of Holy Scripture at the University of Oxford and continued teaching at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, until his retirement.
